The republican conference on "Gender problem and modern Azerbaijan" was held at Azerbaijan University today. The purpose of the conference is to maintain the issue of ensuring gender equality in center stage, to share the scientific achievements and experiences gained in this field, to analyze existing problems and to propose the ways to solve them in Azerbaijan.
Before the event, the participants laid a wreath at the bust of national leader Heydar Aliyev in the lobby of the university, and his memory was commemorated with great respect.
Rector of Azerbaijan University Saadat Aliyeva made an opening speech after playing the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Rector noted that, ensuring gender equality as an actual issue is in the spotlight of our society. The Azerbaijani woman, who contributes to the development of our society and strengthening our independence, is compared with the women of the world's developed countries for their educational and intellectual potential today. The basis of all these achievements is the factor of women's policy established by national leader Heydar Aliyev and successful continuation of this policy by President Ilham Aliyev. Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva, the First Vice President, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO, is an example with her consistent activity for all Azerbaijani women not only in public-political activities, but also in protecting our national-moral values and cultural heritage.
Saadat Aliyeva expressed her confidence that the discussions which will be held at the conference will contribute to the policy carried out by our state in this direction and wish all gathered a successful conference.
Sadagat Gahramanova, Deputy Chairman of State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs stressed the importance of solving the problems of gender relations in family. Prof. Isaxan Valiyev, Head of the Knowledge Foundation under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan talked about the constitutional bases of ensuring gender equality.
Lamiya Zeynalova, adviser to Ombudsman on gender equality noted that a legal basis for ensuring gender equality was created in Azerbaijan, but problems still remain. Social discrimination against women and the restoration of their violated rights are in constant focus of the Ombudsman's Office.
Prof. Fuad Mammadov, President of the Azerbaijan Cultural Association "Simurg" stated the importance of the culture of execution of laws to the forefront in his speech. prof. Rena Mirzazade, Head of Department of Philosophy of Modern Politics of ANAS Philosophy Institute talked about the history of gender. Elgun Safarov, Head of Information and Analytical Research Department of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs presented a statistical picture on ensuring gender equality in our country.
“The history of gender relations in Azerbaijan” by prof. Rena Ibrahimbeyova, PhD in psychology and “Gender aspects of artistic creativity and feminist criticism” by prof. Asif Hajiyev, doctor of philological sciences were listened at the plenary session.
After the break, the conference continued its work in three sections - Gender History, Gender Issues in Literature and Religion, Legal Aspects of Gender.
The conference ended with the closing speech of the rector Saadat Aliyeva. The rector noted that during the tense and creative day, the participants of the conference listened to the lectures on various aspects of gender problem, as well as conducted productive and positive dicussions. 94 lectures were admitted to the conference representing 20 universities, 5 scientific-research institutes, various government agencies and non-governmental organizations of Azerbaijan, 72 scientists participated in the conference, 68 lectures were listened. It's gratifying that there are a great number of young researchers among the speakers.
In her closing speech Saadat Aliyev noted that the conference of "Gender problem and modern Azerbaijan" is planned to be held in a wider context and international status for the next year.
The rector thanked university personnel who actively participated in organizing the conference at a high level.
The conference brought together prominent Azerbaijani scientists, as well as representatives of the government agencies and NGOs, most universities including regional universities operating in the country and relevant institutions of ANAS in the field of ensuring gender equality.
