The foundation of private higher education in Azerbaijan was laid by the Azerbaijan University. First private university – Azerbaijan University was established in 1991 by professor Selahaddin Khalilov. The following is the list of AU rectors:
- Salahaddin Khalilov, doctor of philosophy, correspondent member of ANAS – 1991-2006;
- Farahim Sadigov, doctor of pedagogics, professor - 2006-2007;
- Akif Musayev, doctor of economics, correspondent member of ANAS – 2007-2011;
- Aslan Gahramanli, candidate of physics-math, writer – 2011-2012;
- Eldar Gahramanov, candidate of economics, Deputy of the Milli Mejlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the II call – May 1, 2012- January 28, 2015;
- Farid Ahmadov, Ph.D. in law – from January 26, 2015- March 13, 2017;
- Saadat Aliyeva has been appointed as rector of Azerbaijan University since March 13, 2017.
The education at AU is regulated by the “Law on Education of Azerbaijan Republic” and by the decree # 75 of the Cabinet of Ministers dated to 23.04.2010 (State standards and programs for high education). The Bologna process is valid at AU since 2006. Azerbaijan University was accredited by the Ministry of Education Accreditation Council of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 5 (five) years, as private higher education institution under the order of the Ministry dated July 20, 2018, F-520.
The organization of the teaching process and assessment of students are adapted to the requirements of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Training is conducted in Azerbaijani, English and Russian languages. A one-year language training program is available for students enrolled in English-language specialties.
1305 under-graduate students in 16 specializations; 93 graduate students in 13 specializations; 29 doctorates in 24 specializations, 30 degree candidates study at Azerbaijan University.
There are 3 schools with 230 teachers at Azerbaijan University. Two of them are correspondent members of ANAS, 16 are doctor of sciences, professors; 20 associate professor; 30 are candidate of sciences.
Azerbaijan University has 4302 under-graduate between 1995-2019 and 564 graduate students in 1999-2019 years.
The university is a member of international exchange programs such as Erasmus +, Mevlana and DAAD. The program Erasmus + provides students with short-term training opportunities in leading universities in Turkey and Europe. The program Mevlana provides an opportunity for academic exchange with Turkish universities.
Azerbaijan University is the first private university teaching a Social work. It was began in 2009.
The University has also been certified as an exam sub-center of Pearson Test of English (PTE) internationally recognized the English language skills as an Official Accreditation Testing Center in Azerbaijan of ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) internationally recognized the computer skills.
Azerbaijan University applies International Joint and Dual Degrees with Kharkov National Radio Electronics University of Ukraine. The program covers undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science and computer engineering.
There are Dual Degrees Program where students can be awarded diplomas in 2 different specialties in four years.
Training and management at the Azerbaijan University, which has received the ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management System certification, is organized on the basis of international standards.
