Azerbaijan University hosted an event dedicated to October 18 – Independence Restoration Day. The event highlighted that the “Constitutional Act on the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan”, adopted on October 18, 1991, marked the moment when the Azerbaijani people, expressing their historical will, separated from the Soviet Empire. This decision was not merely a political act but the result of centuries of national liberation struggle and a triumph of national consciousness. For the Azerbaijani people, the restoration of independence is not only a state symbol but also a sacred value, imbued with the blood of martyrs who died defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the faith of millions of Azerbaijanis.

The event, organized by the Department of Political and Social Sciences, featured reports by Prof. Gabil Aliyev, lecturer Samir Humbatov, and fourth-year Political Science student Sabina Jalilova. A video dedicated to October 18 – Independence Restoration Day was also presented.

Presentations covered the stages of the Azerbaijani national liberation movement and the struggle for independence, emphasized the restoration of independence under difficult historical and political conditions, and highlighted the pivotal role of national leader Heydar Aliyev in preserving, strengthening, and developing Azerbaijan’s independence, always relying on the support of the people. The reports also underscored achievements of President Ilham Aliyev, the victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief, since the beginning of his tenure in 2003.

It was further noted that one of the most severe challenges on Azerbaijan’s path to independence was the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which now remains in the past. The victory in Karabakh further strengthened Azerbaijan’s independence. This triumph, ensuring full sovereignty and restoring territorial integrity, once again demonstrates how valuable and worthy of protection Azerbaijan’s independence is.
