Azerbaijan University hosted event dedicated to May 28 – Independence Da
An event dedicated to May 28 – Independence Day was held at Azerbaijan University. The gathering commemorated the historic establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) and highlighted the importance of such significant dates in fostering education and patriotic values among youth.
The event, organized by the Department of Foreign Languages, featured speeches by Yusif Gasimov, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs at Azerbaijan University; Azer Suleymanov, a guest of the University and Chairman of the Nasimi district organization of the New Azerbaijan Party; and Rasul Mekhdikhanov, PhD in History and a lecturer at the Department of Political and Social Sciences.
In his opening address, Vice-Rector Yusif Gasimov emphasized that the proclamation of the Declaration of Independence of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on May 28, 1918, in Tbilisi, Georgia, and the official announcement to the world of the establishment of the first democratic republic in the East was a momentous event in the life of the Azerbaijani people. He noted that despite extremely challenging conditions, the ADR successfully fulfilled its historic mission by introducing new and progressive traditions in state-building and governance. This path and mission, he stressed, could not be erased from the history of Azerbaijani statehood by Bolshevik occupation.
Azer Suleymanov, Chairman of the Nasimi district organization of the New Azerbaijan Party, stated that modern independent Azerbaijan, built on the ideas of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and currently experiencing the strongest and most glorious period in its history, remains faithful to the traditions of statehood established by the ADR 107 years ago. He highlighted the liberation of ancestral lands from Armenian occupation by the victorious Azerbaijani Army under Supreme Commander-in-Chief President Ilham Aliyev after 30 years of occupation, the establishment of full control over state borders, and the complete restoration of constitutional order and sovereignty throughout the country as great historic achievements. “I can say with confidence that today the souls of the ADR’s founders are at peace,” he concluded.
Owning a modern, independent and sovereign state was the biggest dream and dream of the ADR founders: “I can say with confidence that today the souls of the ADR’s founders are at peace,” he concluded.
In his speech, Rasul Mekhdikhanov, PhD in History and lecturer of the Department of Political and Social Sciences, touched upon topics such as the resettlement of Armenians in the mountainous part of Karabakh, the historical significance of the ADR, Armenia’s military aggression against Azerbaijan, the historical roots of the occupation war, and related issues.
The event concluded with a cultural program performed by students Aslanova Kamilla, Ismayilova Nuray, Gadirova Aysel, Garaeva Fatima, Azimova Gunel, Hasanli Nigar, Gasimov Khagani, Jafarzade Fatima, Gurbanismayilova Maryam, Safarli Maryam, Iskandarli Bahar, Fatima Mammadova, Rahmatova Nuray, and Gulmammadova Esmira, dedicated to May 28 – Independence Day.
