Awareness event titled “Why do I want to become a donor?” held at Azerbaijan University
An awareness event titled “Why do I want to become a donor?” was held at Azerbaijan University, organized by the Coordination Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation under the Ministry of Health.
The event was opened by Yusif Gasimov, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs, who spoke about the importance of organ donation and public education on this topic, emphasizing its relevance in Azerbaijan.
Following this, Yegana Abbasova, Chair of the Coordination Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation, provided information about the history of organ transplantation in Azerbaijan, the establishment of the Center, its objectives, activities, the current state of organ donation in the country, and its future goals. In her speech, Yegana Abbasova stated that only the organs of individuals diagnosed with brain death in intensive care units are deemed suitable for transplantation. Currently, transplantation surgeries are carried out in accordance with legislation and funded by the state. She also discussed the legal framework governing organ transplantation and drew attention to statistics on transplant operations performed in the country.
Next, Mehriban Aliyeva, the Center’s coordinator and physician, gave a presentation titled “Why do I want to become a donor?”, in which she covered the medical, legal, and moral aspects of organ donation.
During the interactive part of the event, students’ questions were answered, and active participants were presented with gifts featuring the organ donation logo.
At the conclusion of the event, University staff and students who wished to support organ donation signed statements of consent to become donors after death, as approved by the Collegium of the Ministry of Health.
