A national scientific conference entitled “The independence of Azerbaijan is eternal and irreversible” was held at Azerbaijan University within the framework of the Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty, jointly organized by the Science and Education Committee of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan University.

The event began with the performance of the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan, followed by a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence, restoration of territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Azerbaijan.

Opening the conference with a welcoming address, the Rector of Azerbaijan University, PhD in Philology Saadat Aliyeva, greeted the guests and wished the event every success. In her speech, the Rector provided information on the activities carried out at Azerbaijan University within the framework of the Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty. She noted that special attention is always given at all events held at the University to issues related to strengthening Azerbaijani statehood, protecting and preserving national identity, and safeguarding national and spiritual values. Respect for the traditions of statehood, the spirit of patriotism, and the formation of social responsibility among the younger generation are among the University’s priorities. In this regard, the Conference organised on the theme “The independence of Azerbaijan is eternal and irreversible” is of great importance both in terms of strengthening historical memory and in terms of accurately conveying the realities of the modern era to students.

Following this, presentations were delivered by the Chair of the Science and Education Committee of the Milli Majlis, Prof. Anar Isgandarov; members of the Committee – Prof. Bakhtiyar Aliyev, Assoc. Prof. Mehriban Valiyeva, Assoc. Prof. Jeyhun Mammadov, Prof. Vasif Gafarov, Shahin Seyidzada; as well as Prof. Gabil Aliyev from the Department of Political and Social Sciences of Azerbaijan University and the Head of the Department, Assoc. Prof. Elvin Talishinsky.

The presentations examined the development path of the traditions of statehood, the stages of the struggle for sovereignty, and the essence of contemporary historical realities, taking into account the last 200 years of Azerbaijan’s history. The speakers emphasised that consistency in the country’s strategic development line, commitment to the principles of statehood, and resolute protection of national interests are the main guarantees of preserving independence.

It was also noted that the event serves as an important ideological platform, as it is held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the first Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the 5th anniversary of the Karabakh Victory, at the intersection of and on the eve of significant dates in the history of modern Azerbaijan, such as 9 November - State Flag Day, 12 November - Constitution Day, 17 November - National Revival Day, 20 November - Aghdam City Day, and 25 November - Kalbajar City Day. It was highlighted that Azerbaijan suffered successive territorial losses over the past two centuries and that the initial years following the restoration of its independence were extremely difficult. With the return of Heydar Aliyev to power in 1993, the foundation was laid for strengthening the country’s political, economic, and military power, ushering in a new era. The determination, will, and consistent implementation of the strategic course defined by the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev and carried forward by President Ilham Aliyev, along with the unity of the Azerbaijani people and the heroism of the Azerbaijani Army, made the Karabakh Victory possible. The founder of the modern Azerbaijani state is the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev, while the architect of the Karabakh Victory is President Ilham Aliyev. The position that Azerbaijan demonstrates today on the international stage is based on strong foundations of statehood.

It was emphasised that with the Karabakh Victory, Azerbaijan took the first step toward reclaiming its lost territories and restoring historical justice. Despite the multifaceted historical roots of the Karabakh conflict, it was resolved precisely due to strong state will, strong presidential leadership, and national solidarity. This Victory wrote a new page in history, further strengthened the self-awareness of the Azerbaijani people, and marked the beginning of the process of the “Great Return”. Karabakh and East Zangazur are being rapidly restored, and these territories are now being transformed into developed and modern places to live.
