Regional Studies students discussed the causes of violence against women
Second-year students of the Department of Regional Studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Azerbaijan University participated in an event dedicated to 25 November – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, held within the framework of the “Socio-Political Anthropology” course. The event was organized at the initiative of Dr. of Philosophy, Assoc. Prof. Rana Mammadova, lecturer at the Department of Social Work Organization at Azerbaijan University.
The purpose of the event was to foster students’ sense of social responsibility regarding violence, to analyze the social causes of violence against women, and to discuss possible ways of addressing this issue. The event also aimed to raise awareness of women’s rights and to draw attention to the serious consequences of violence.
During the event, participants discussed violence against women, its various forms, and methods of prevention. Particular attention was drawn to the less visible forms of violence - psychological, economic, and emotional - which have a significant impact on women and undermine them. It was noted that violence also includes certain patterns of behavior that are often normalized in society, such as shouting, insults, interference in a woman’s behavior or clothing, and devaluing her. It was emphasized that the fight against violence against women should not be limited to a single day.
It should be noted that in 1999, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Each year, large-scale events are held worldwide, including in Azerbaijan, to raise public awareness of this critical issue.
