Azerbaijan University launches new research initiative: “One Article, Two Generations”
The Department of Political and Social Sciences at Azerbaijan University has launched an innovative higher education initiative: the “One Article, Two Generations” project. The primary objective of the Project is to engage students more actively in research activities, enhance their academic writing skills, foster a new generation of researchers, and elevate scientific collaboration between faculty members and students to a higher level. Within the framework of the “One Article, Two Generations” project, experienced scholars and faculty members of the Department conduct research jointly with students, while co-authored papers based on the findings are prepared and published in various local and international academic journals.
Assoc. Prof. Elvin Talyshinsky, Head of the Department of Political and Social Sciences, PhD in Political Sciences, and author of the project idea, stated that the initiative aims not merely to write articles, but to establish an academic school that brings a fresh perspective to science: “Many talented young people are nurtured in University lecture halls. However, the majority lack the opportunity to engage in scientific research, author academic papers, or master the nuances of the publishing process. Through this Project, we are creating a new model of scientific collaboration by combining faculty experience with student energy. Our aim is not only to increase publication output, but to cultivate the scholars, analysts, and researchers of tomorrow”.
According to the Department Head, the Project will also contribute to popularizing scientific activity across Azerbaijani higher education and integrating youth into the international academic community: “We believe that the sustainable development of science occurs through the intergenerational transfer of knowledge. The Project concept is built upon this philosophy. A paper co-authored today by a lecturer and a student will shape the new faces of Azerbaijani science tomorrow. We hope this initiative serves as a model for other universities and breathes new life into student research across the nation”.
Elvin Talyshinsky notes that this initiative is not merely a project, but a new academic model aimed at advancing student research in Azerbaijani higher education. Combining faculty expertise with student creativity, the “One Article, Two Generations” project facilitates the transfer of scientific knowledge across generations, shapes young individuals into researchers, and further revitalizes university research environments.
It is encouraging that the Project has already begun producing its first results at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Thus, the scientific papers co-authored by Sabina Mammadli, PhD in History, and Narmin Samidova, 2nd-year International Relations student; Elchin Hasanli, PhD in Philosophy, and Omar Ismayilov, 3rd-year Museum Studies, Archival Work, and Monument Protection student; young researcher Babak Maharramov and Basdi Aghaliyeva, 3rd-year State and Public Relations student; as well as Nurjan Gayibova, 3rd-year Philosophy student, and Rashana Jabbarova, 2nd-year State and Public Relations student, have been published across various academic periodicals.
It should be noted that in modern higher education systems, student-faculty co-authorship is considered an essential component of academic tradition at leading global universities. Across universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and Australia, students engage in scientific research alongside faculty members during their studies and serve as co-authors of academic publications. At universities in these countries, this initiative is implemented through dedicated programms. In Azerbaijan, this model is being introduced for the first time as a systematic, sustainable, and institutional faculty-level project.
