A seminar titled “Hidden Drug-Related Risks in the Digital Environment” was organized at Azerbaijan University to mark the “International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking”.

Opening the event with introductory remarks, Nigar Shahhuseynbayova, Head of the Social Work Organization Department, emphasized that drug addiction and substance abuse represent one of the most pressing global challenges of modern times. She noted that this issue poses a grave threat not only to human health but also to family well-being, public safety, and the future of the younger generation. To raise awareness of this threat, June 26 is observed annually as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by decision of the UN General Assembly. Today, it is vital to intensify awareness campaigns by uniting the efforts of government bodies, educational institutions, civil society organizations, and international partners, with a particular focus on promoting healthy lifestyles and expanding preventive measures among youth.

Aygun Muradli, Director of the Center for Social and Psychological Research and Counseling, then delivered a presentation entitled “Hidden Drug-Related Risks in the Digital Environment and the Promotion of a Healthy Lifestyle”. The presentation covered key topics such as modern methods of illicit drug trafficking in the digital space, the targeting of youth through social media platforms and instant messaging applications, the detrimental impact of drugs on physical and psychological health, families, and society, legal liabilities, and the vital role of promoting healthy living. The report highlighted that the rapid advancement of digital technologies has transformed the channels and operations of illicit drug distribution. Today, in addition to traditional risks, young people face dangers concealed within the digital environment. Education, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and appropriate guidance for young people are among the most effective preventive tools in combating drug addiction.

The event concluded with an interactive discussion and a Q&A session on the topic.
