A commemorative event dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide was held at Azerbaijan University. At the event, the national anthem was performed, and the memory of the genocide victims was honored with a minute of silence.

It was noted at the event that the Azerbaijani state approached the Khojaly genocide, one of the gravest crimes in history, not from a position of emotional short-sightedness, but from the standpoint of the principle of restoring historical justice. Today, the tricolor Azerbaijani flag proudly flies in Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur, liberated from the occupation of Armenia, as well as in Khojaly, symbolizing victory and return. The souls of the innocent victims of the Khojaly genocide rejoice, as their homeland has been liberated from occupation, the Azerbaijani people honor their memory every year, and the Azerbaijani state continues to demonstrate a principled position at international forums regarding the restoration of historical justice.

At the event, the Head of the Department of Political and Social Sciences, PhD in Political Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Elvin Talyshinski, delivered a speech. The Head of the Department noted that the Azerbaijani state has been systematically working for many years to bring the facts of the Khojaly genocide to the attention of the international community. The most effective platform has been the international awareness campaign “Justice for Khojaly!”, launched in 2008 at the initiative of the Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Leyla Aliyeva. The consistent policy aimed at achieving international legal and political assessment of the tragedy and restoring historical justice remains relevant today.

Then, the participants of the event listened to presentations by Prof. Asif Hajiyev from the Department of Translation and Philology and Assoc. Prof. Zaur Aliyev from the Department of Political and Social Sciences. The presentation of Prof. Asif Hajiyev was dedicated to the topic “The Khojaly Genocide in Literature and Art”. Assoc. Prof. Zaur Aliyev addressed the political and legal aspects of the genocide in his presentation.

The event concluded with the screening of a video dedicated to the tragedy.

It should be noted that an exhibition dedicated to the Khojaly genocide was also organized at the University.
